Preserving the Past for the Future
The Old Gaol & Stocks
The Old Gaol started life as a hay barn and animal shelter circa 1750. After about 100 years the local’s felt some sort of law and order was needed in Penkridge so the building was converted into a village lockup. Stocks were placed behind the brook (not visible now ) and two holding cells were created within the main building. It was only ever used for minor crimes – petty theft, drunk and disorderly and the stays were probably just overnight, followed by a spell in the stocks where locals would throw rotten fruit and veg - just for the fun of it!!
After about 75 or so years the established police force was formed and there was no need for the lockup anymore.
It then sadly fell into disrepair for many years until finally rescued by the newly formed Civic Society in 1997. After some major fundraising and grants from local business’s. The work began to restore this beautiful grade 2 listed building for future generations. After lots of very hard work by our loyal members It finally opened its doors to the public in July 2000.
It is now open as a Museum and Heritage Centre from Easter to September every Saturday 10am-1pm and on Wednesday during the school summer holidays. Again thanks to our faithful members who volunteer to act as guides for our visitors. Over this last year we have had over 300 children and adults through our doors mostly local but a few from other counties, Sadly our overseas visitors have yet to return, We have also had some organised groups – Beavers, Scouts, local schools, St John Cadets, The Railway Link and a cycle club who used our building as a “clue” in one of its treasure hunts.
